Animal Kingdom

Nahtazu — it’s not a zoo. It’s a whole world unto itself.

🌿 Est. April 22, 1998 🦁 500+ Animal Species 🌍 5 Immersive Lands

Disney's Most Breathtaking Park Has Its Own Heartbeat

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is unlike any theme park ever built. Opened on Earth Day — April 22, 1998 — it was Walt Disney’s vision of a park that could celebrate the wonder of the natural world with the same storytelling power that Disney brings to everything it touches. The result is something genuinely extraordinary: 580 acres of lush, immersive landscape where more than 5,000 animals representing 300 species roam, soar, and swim alongside some of the most thrilling and visually spectacular attractions in all of Disney World.

At the heart of it all stands the Tree of Life — a 145-foot sculpted icon carved with 325 animal figures, and the most awe-inspiring piece of environmental art in any theme park on earth. Animal Kingdom moves at a different pace than the other Disney parks. It breathes. It rustles. It surprises you with a giraffe at the crest of a hill or a trumpeting elephant at dawn. Come with curiosity, and it will reward you endlessly.

“Animal Kingdom asks something different of its guests — not just to ride and watch, but to look, listen, and feel the wild world pressing in around them. It is the most alive place Disney has ever created.”

Five Worlds, Each More Wild Than the Last

Animal Kingdom is divided into five immersive lands, each transporting you to a completely different corner of the world or the universe.

🌌

Pandora – The World of Avatar

Float through bioluminescent jungles and soar on a banshee above the alien landscape of Pandora. Especially magical after dark.

🦒

Africa

Home to the Kilimanjaro Safaris — a real savanna teeming with lions, elephants, giraffes, and hippos just feet from your vehicle.

🐯

Asia

The raging rapids of Kali River Rapids and the legendary Expedition Everest coaster await among ancient temple ruins and lush rice paddies.

🦕

DinoLand U.S.A.

Travel back 65 million years on the DINOSAUR ride, or spin through prehistoric fun at TriceraTop Spin and The Boneyard playground.

🌿

Discovery Island

The park’s lush central hub, anchored by the Tree of Life and surrounded by trails, animal encounters, and the It’s Tough to Be a Bug show.

🌿

Pandora — The World of Avatar: A World Unto Itself

When Pandora opened in 2017, it set a new benchmark for theme park world-building. During the day, the floating mountains and lush alien flora are jaw-dropping. At night, the entire land transforms: every plant, path, and river glows with bioluminescent light in blues, purples, and greens. It is one of the most visually stunning environments ever created for a theme park — and it’s home to two of Disney World’s finest attractions.

Avatar Flight of Passage is consistently ranked the best ride in all of Walt Disney World. You’re linked to a mountain banshee and sent soaring over Pandora’s alien landscape in a breathtaking 3D flight experience. The sensation of actually riding a living creature — its chest rising and falling, muscles shifting beneath you — is unlike anything else in any theme park anywhere on earth.

✦ MUST-DO ATTRACTIONS✦

Attractions That Leave You Breathless

Pandora

🪂

Avatar Flight of Passage

The single best ride in Walt Disney World, full stop. A simulator so immersive — wind, scent, movement, and sweeping visuals — that first-time riders often sit in silence for a moment afterward. Secure Lightning Lane first thing or expect a 90-minute wait. It is worth every second.

Africa

🦁

Kilimanjaro Safaris

This isn’t a simulated safari — it’s the real thing. Board an open-air vehicle and spend 20 minutes driving through a genuine 110-acre savanna shared with lions, African elephants, white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, flamingos, and more. No two rides are ever alike.

Asia

🏔️

Expedition Everest

One of Disney’s finest roller coasters  a high-speed mountain train that careens through Himalayan temple ruins, plunges into darkness, and comes face-to-face with the legendary Yeti. The queue itself is a world-class storytelling experience with genuine Himalayan artifacts.

Discovery Island

🐛

It's Tough to Be a Bug!

A high-energy modern steakhouse with an upscale lounge atmosphere, exceptional dry-aged cuts, and a rooftop terrace that’s perfect for a special occasion dinner. STK strikes the balance between nightlife energy and serious culinary craft beautifully.

Asia

🌊

Kali River Rapids

A soaking-wet whitewater raft ride through a Southeast Asian rainforest, with a powerful environmental conservation message woven into every twist and drop. Ride in the afternoon when the Florida sun makes getting drenched a welcome relief rather than a shock.

Pandora

🌺

Na'vi River Journey

A gentle, gorgeous boat ride through a bioluminescent rainforest toward the Na’vi Shaman of Songs. The animatronic Shaman is one of Disney’s finest — eerily lifelike in her movements and expressions. Perfect for all ages and a beautiful complement to Flight of Passage.

🌱 A Park With a Purpose

Animal Kingdom is the only Disney park built around a genuine conservation mission. Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team cares for the park’s animals and actively partners with wildlife organizations around the world. The Disney Conservation Fund has contributed over $100 million to protect wildlife and wild places since 1995. When you visit Animal Kingdom, you’re not just a theme park guest — you’re a small part of something much larger.

✦ WILDLIFE TRAILS ✦

The Animal Trails That Slow Everything Down.0

One of Animal Kingdom’s greatest treasures is hiding in plain sight — and most guests rush right past it. The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in Africa winds through lush forest past western lowland gorillas, okapis, naked mole rats, and dozens of exotic bird species. It is one of the most rewarding 30 minutes you can spend in any Disney park, and it costs nothing beyond your park admission.

In Asia, the Maharajah Jungle Trek takes you through ancient palace ruins overgrown with jungle, home to Komodo dragons, tigers, gibbons, and massive fruit bats. Walking these trails at a leisurely pace — binoculars optional, curiosity required — is Animal Kingdom at its purest and most magical.

✦ FOOD & DINING ✦

Where to Eat at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom’s dining scene leans into its global themes beautifully, with flavors ranging from African-inspired stews to Indian street food to wood-fired American barbecue. The park has elevated its food offerings dramatically in recent years.

🍲

Tiffins Restaurant

The park’s premier fine dining — globally inspired small plates and entrées in a beautifully decorated space filled with authentic Disney Imagineering art.

🍺

Nomad Lounge

Adjacent to Tiffins, this outdoor lounge offers inventive cocktails and shareable bites in one of the most relaxed atmospheres in any Disney park.

🍗

Satu'li Canteen

Pandora’s main counter service. Build-your-own bowls with alien-themed ingredients. Consistently ranked among the best quick-service meals in Disney World.

🥘

Harambe Market

Open-air African street food stalls serving ribs, chicken skewers, and bobotie — with a lively atmosphere that feels genuinely transported from East Africa.

🍛

Yak & Yeti

Asia’s table-service gem — pan-Asian cuisine including Mongolian beef, crispy honey chicken, and ahi tuna nachos in a richly decorated Himalayan lodge.

🧃

Pongu Pongu

Pandora’s quirky kiosk serving Night Blossom — a frozen passion fruit and limeade drink in a glowing souvenir cup that is pure Pandora magic in a cup.

✦ PLANNING YOUR VISIT ✦

Tips for Experiencing Animal Kingdom Fully

1

Rope drop Avatar Flight of Passage on day one — it is the most in-demand attraction in the entire park and Lightning Lane books out fast. If you can only prioritize one ride, this is it.

2

Do Kilimanjaro Safaris first thing in the morning. Animals are most active in the cooler early hours, and you’ll see far more wildlife than on an afternoon ride.

3

Return to Pandora after dark. The bioluminescent transformation is one of Disney World’s most jaw-dropping experiences and shouldn’t be missed under any circumstances.

4

Budget time for the wildlife trails — Gorilla Falls and Maharajah Jungle Trek. Most guests skip them entirely; that’s their loss and your opportunity for a quiet, genuinely memorable encounter.

5

Book Tiffins 60 days out if fine dining is on your agenda. It’s one of the most underrated restaurants in all of Disney World and fills up quickly.

6

Animal Kingdom closes earlier than other Disney parks — often by 8 or 9 PM. Plan accordingly and make sure Pandora after dark is your final destination of the evening.

7

Bring a poncho for Kali River Rapids or wear clothes you don’t mind soaking. There is no gentle version of this ride — you will get wet, and people will laugh, and it will be wonderful.

The Wild Is Waiting for You

Animal Kingdom is the Disney park that demands the most from you — your patience, your attention, your willingness to slow down and let the world come to you. And in return, it gives you something no other park can: the thunderous rumble of an elephant herd, the alien glow of Pandora at midnight, a mountain gorilla meeting your gaze through the glass. These are not simulations. They are moments. Come ready to be amazed.
